Karen Irwin-Dennis is Building a Brand Rooted in Love, Purpose, and Community
Meet Karen Irwin-Dennis, the Heart Behind Johnny Cakes
Some businesses begin with a business plan, some begin with a story. For Karen Irwin-Dennis, owner of Johnny Cakes, that story starts with her son Johnny, whom she lost in 2006 after a six-year battle with brain cancer.
The name Johnny Cakes isn't just a business name. It's a tribute. As Karen says, "Not a day goes by that I don't carry him with me."
Through her home-based baking business, Karen has found a way to honour Johnny's memory through beautifully crafted baked goods. She told me, "Baking is my love language."
Karen donates proceeds from her sales to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, turning every order into an opportunity to give back. In March of this year, Karen completed an 12-day event that saw her bake and sell more than 700 cookies, allowing her to donate $1,500 to Make-A-Wish.
When we met for her brand photography session, I was struck by the heart behind what she does. Johnny Cakes isn't just about cookies. It's about love, legacy, community, and carrying forward the memory of her deeply cherished son.
And yes, the cookies are every bit as incredible as they look. I was lucky enough to bring a few samples home and they were absolutely unforgettable.
If you'd like to follow Karen's journey, keep an eye on Johnny Cakes for upcoming markets, cookie sales, and fundraising events. Every purchase supports a business built on love and helps contribute to the incredible work of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
You can follow Johnny Cakes on Facebook.
Trust me when I say this: if you ever get the chance to try one of Karen's cookies, don't hesitate.
Karen’s Brand Photography Experience:
We ask our clients to fill in a post-session questionnaire about their experience with us. Before Karen stepped in front of the camera, she had many of the same concerns that so many business owners have before a brand photography session. This is what Karen had to say:
Pre-Session Concerns: "What Are We Going to Do in the Photos?"
Before her brand photography session, she wasn't worried about the value of professional images. She already knew they would be important for her business. What she wasn't sure about was the process itself.
Karen wondered what images we would take, what she would be expected to do during the session, and whether she would know how to pose. Like many people, she was also nervous about how she would look in the final photographs. These are some of the most common fears we hear before a session.
Most people don't spend their days in front of a camera. Knowing how to pose isn't something you're expected to arrive with. That's our job to guide you through.
The Experience: "I Felt Like Cathy Took Care of Everything"
One of the things that surprised Karen most was how easy the entire experience felt. Instead of feeling pressure, she felt supported from start to finish. As she described it:
"I was most surprised about how easy Cathy made it! I felt like she took care of everything and I just had to pose how she wanted me to and it flowed very smoothly."
What started as uncertainty quickly turned into confidence. And importantly, it turned into fun.
Many people arrive expecting their brand photography session to feel stressful or uncomfortable. Instead, they often leave saying the same thing: "I actually enjoyed that."
When there's a clear plan, thoughtful guidance, and room to simply be yourself, the experience feels much more natural than most people expect.
More Than Photos: Learning How to Show Up Online
One of the unexpected outcomes of this session had nothing to do with the final gallery. During the shoot, we talked about lighting, backgrounds, styling, and how images work together to support a brand.
Afterward, Karen had tools that she could continue using in her business long after the session was over.
She shared: "I learned so much during the session about how to take photos of my brand. After the session I realized that I knew nothing about photography beforehand and now I feel like I can confidently take photos of my products."
That confidence matters. Professional brand photography can help you better understand how to create consistent visual content between professional shoots.
We offer an add-on service to our clients in product based businesses.
We can teach you how to shoot your products in a way that will have you producing your own product images with just a few simple steps. Karen was a great student!
The Transformation: From Uncertain to Confident
Today, these images will be used across her social media marketing and business promotions over the coming months.
But the biggest transformation wasn't just the photographs themselves, it was the confidence that came from seeing her business represented exactly the way she had hoped.
When asked how she would describe the experience to another business owner, her answer was simple:
"Cathy has an innate understanding of what her clients want out of the shoot and she delivers. The photos are exactly what I was hoping for."
I love hearing that from Karen. That is exactly my hope for every client.
Is Professional Brand Photography Worth It?
For anyone sitting on the fence about investing in professional brand photography or a headshot session, Karen had this to say:
"The difference between taking your own photos and hiring a professional to take them is huge. It's definitely worth investing in. The photos are the first thing your clients will see and having professional photos brings you up a few levels. It takes you from blah to wow!"
Professional photographyis about creating images that reflect the quality of your work, build trust with potential clients, and help you show up confidently in your business.
Thinking About Your Own Brand Photography Session?

Our job is to guide you through the process, help you feel comfortable in front of the camera, and create images that feel like you. The best sessions don't start with confidence. They create it.
